Crazxy Review

Set in Gurugram, Crazxy is a crazy story that gives a glimpse into the life of Dr Abhimanyu Sood (Sohum Shah). Sood – a surgeon who accidentally caused the death of a young appendicitis patient. Now threatened with a court case that he is sure to lose, Abhimanyu ops for an out-of-court settlement where he has to pay the bereaved family a sum of Rs. 5 crore. While he arranges the amount, and leaves with the bag of money in his car’s boot to settle the matter, he receives a shocking call. His teen daughter who was born with Down’s Syndrome is kidnapped and the kidnapper demands the exact amount to set her free.

What will he choose – his daughter or staying out of jail, in exchange for the Rs 5 crore? Whose kidnapped his daughter – his ex-wife with whom he shares a strained relationship, the family of the deceased who want to take revenge, his current partner Jaan (as seen several times on his cell phone) or someone else? To know the answers, one needs to watch the Sohum Shah-led one-of-its-kind thriller that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Read our Crazxy review to know whether or knot the film is worth a watch.

What’s Works

The film – with its writing, brilliant acting and compelling BGM has created magic that is sure to impress millions. Sohum Shah’s impeccable screen presence makes up for the absence of any other faces.

What Doesn’t Work

The plotline – despite being immersive, is sometimes unbelievable.

Technical Analysis

Story

Written by Girish Kohli, the immersive narrative gives the audience a glimpse into crazy life of Dr Abhimanyu Sood. Spanning a few hours – the film ends soon after the sun sets, the film begins with Dr Abhimanyu Sood arranging Rs 5 crore to pay the family of an appendicitis patient who accidently died in an out-of-court compensation. While en route to make the payment, he’s badgered with multiple calls from his colleague, his current flame ‘Jaan’, his distraught ex-wife and a familiar voice – which he initially can’t place, who tells him that he has kidnapped his daughter Vedika and wants the exact sum current in the boot of his car as ransom.

It’s here that we learn Dr Sood never actually wanted this daughter to be born as she’s a ‘financial and emotional liability’ owning to her Down’s Syndrome. While he races first towards his initial destination, he later changes course as he realises his daughter is in peril and his father love wins. The writing is top-notch and in immersive thank to it solely being form the POV of a single person. However, it’s also unbelievable at times. Like when De Abhimanyu directs a life-saving surgery over a video call while simultaneously changing his car tire in the middle of nowhere and telling the kidnapped how to save his daughter who is seizing.

Music

The background music – especially during the climax, adds layers to the screenplay. Kudos to music composer Vishal Bhardwaj for the delivering something that will leave you at the edge of your seat.

Crazxy Star Cast

Sohum Shah steals the show with an array of emotions ranging from being an arrogant, stuck-up in the first scene to making you pity after he goes through several battles that leave him mentally exhausted and physically injured. From being an absentee father who is willing to sacrifice his all to save the daughter he never wanted to essaying the role of bewildered doctor wanting to save his career at any cost, Sohum embodies every aspect of the character’s life perfectly. From disdain to cheering, Shah takes you on a 90-minutes-long roller coaster ride.

Aside from Sohum, the only other cast members who deliver a couple of dialogues on screen are Unnathi Surana as Sood’s daughter – who makes an emotional appearance at the end and a young doctor (played by an unknown actors) who performs a surgery under tremendous pressure while Dr Abhimanyu consults his over an iPad call.

Every other cast member is only heard and not seen on-screen. You read that right. In the entire 90+ minutes, we only hear the voices of Nimisha Sajayan as Abhimanyu’s ex-wife, Shilpa Shukla as his current flame ‘Jaan,’ Tinnu Anand as the suspected kidnapper, and Piyush Mishra as Sood’s senior colleague hell bent on him paying the settlement amount and saving the hospital from facing a lawsuit. Apart from that, we also hear the voices of Abhimanyu’s lawyer.

Conclusion

Do watch this Sohum Shah masterpiece – that’s on part with his horror-fantasy film Tumbbad, in theatres for treat like no other. Hope our Crazxy review helps you in deciding to watch this film in theatres weeks before you re-watch it on OTT.
